Summary modules (to display top content from other pages) [3265]

    Current behavior:
Wild Apricot has a number of dynamic pages (aka Functional pages, aka modules), such as forum, blog, events etc. Currently there is no easy way to display a summary of recent activity on those pages somewhere else (usually this is needed for the homepage).

    Workaround:

For pages with RSS feed (blog, events) it is possible to take that feed and wrap it in a widget using third-party tools such as widgetbox.com.

    Desired behavior:
Ability to insert summaries of activity on other pages, for example on the homepage.

    Notes:
Suggestions about specific summary modules - how they should look like and what functionality they should offer would be appreciated.

This is incredibly important to us. We need an easy way to produce an event summary on the homepage. This would be a HIGH priority for us.

Re: Summary modules (to display top content from other pages)

This would be very useful to us.  We have an industry news page that is comprised of blog postings.  The ability to have a summary on home page would be great.  What would be even better is the ability to assemble different summary blocks (e.g. events calendar, blog/news items) into an email format that could be sent as a newsletter.  Even better if the blocks could be pasted into other mail programs, for those of us who have non-member mailing lists housed in other locations

Specifically, I would like to be able to create a home page that, for our organization, would contain the following:

A block with a summary of all relevant Industry News (i.e. blog) titles only.  Links from the titles would open each article.  If there were more than one blog page, we could put the summary of each on the same page.  We should have the ability to select the range of posting titles to present (ie all new postings in the last week, month, date range, etc.)

A block with a summary of upcoming event titles only, as links to the actual event listing.  Should be able to select events by date range etc.

A block with a summary of new Forum posts.

It would be good to be able to arrange these blocks on a page and format their appearance.

display our blog/calendar feeds and place on homepage and other pages

We are currently using an rss feed javascript to display our own WA news blog and calendar on the homepage.  But it's not search engine friendly and I haven't found a good one with alot of options. I'd like WA to develop this into the system so that the content displaying on our homepage is current, fresh, and seo-friendly. Here's what we'd like to be able to do...

    1. display any of our WA blog feeds on any page (maybe by adding a code snippet)
    2. in addition, the option of putting these customized feeds in a template (like the header column)
    3. be able to style these feeds as needed
    4. combine any feeds together in one display or separate them and place them where we want
    5. choose number of entries for each feed or combination of feeds
    6. sort by posting date (not publish date)
    7. have additional sorting options

I know this is a HUGE request, but would be great.

I tried to find a similar request in the forums, but didn't recognize this one. The terminology is varied for this topic. Anyway, your awareness and communication of your customers' issues and requests has been outstanding. I just started setting up the site a couple of weeks ago and am very pleased with the amount of support I'm getting. I work with many saas companies and do not find this level of support often. Thanks and keep up the good work.

    Hi Dmitry,

I'm casting my vote for this functionality.  A colleague and I are responding to an RFP that, like BarryN's organization, wants to see blocks of summaries on its home page, and on division-specific 'home' pages.

Re: Summary modules (to display top content from other pages) [3265]

Our developers are currently working on the ability to add summary modules to a webpage via the editor. Initially we will be launching modules for upcoming events and recent blog/forum posts, and we will expand these in the future.

We are aiming to have this included in version 3.2, which should be released towards the end of September.

We've released this feature as "Gadgets" in version 3.2 of Wild Apricot, which was published on October 1st, 2009.

You can create gadgets to get summaries of  blogs, forums, and upcoming events.

Thank you for your suggestion and input into this feature.
