Lapsed Members who then Renew Months Later

I'm having a problem with members who lapse and don't renew until several months later.  Their membership type is changed to Lapse Member.  They login and change their membership type to Regular Membership and "renew".  Is there anyway to force authorization when changing the membership level type or when members renew, so that just like with new members, we have to approve the member before the process is complete?

Membership approval is only done once when a new member joins. Unfortunately, there is no option for re-approval. A lapsed member can login into the profile and renew for next renewal period. If you need to re-approve members then the only way is to delete your lapsed members and then ask them to go through the application again.

I would like to see a re-approval feature for members who renew.

Our organization has a student membership level. New applications are placed in a pending status until the student submits documentation that they are currently enrolled in an academic institution. This is usually done by sending a copy of their student ID card. Once the documentation is received, the application is approved.

However, when a student renews, there is no mechanism to enable us to place their renewal application in a pending approval status while they submit their documentation. As is suggested above, we could require that students reapply each year, but this would require that we archive then delete every student when their membership expires on January 1st. Not only would this be an administrative hassle, but we would probably lose many of our student members who don't want to deal with reapplying each year; student members make up almost one-third of our membership, so this is a big concern of ours.

    Thank you.

Re: Lapsed Members who then Renew Months Later

We also have student members and would like to be able to re-approve each year. Once they have graduated they are no longer eligible for substantial student discounts. If we just automatically renew each year we lose track of students vs regular members, and there is the potential for abuse of the system.

It is harder to get a student to reapply vs a regular member. And we have had complaints in the past using another system where members had to resubmit some of their membership info each year (such as address, to try to ensure we had the most updated information).

Being able to put renewing members on a pending basis would help  us also.

    Thanks.
